Essence of North Dakota
This is a favorite picture of mine, so I included it, to show the terrain of the area,
even though it takes place much later
than the stories of the Dakota Pioneers (as is obvious by the Model T Ford). It was going to
be thrown away after my grandmother died and nobody could identify it. The picture just spoke
to me however, so I kept it. Later I showed it, along with several other unidentified
pictures to my great-aunt Ruth, who immediately identified most of the people.
In the car is Gladys and Blanche (Ruth's sister), Leonard Lidstrom is leaning against
the car in a pose typical for him, and the others are possibly hired hands. Looks like
they've been out berry-picking. A couple scattered buttes are visible in
the background. Most likely taken during the Great Depression.
