 +These are nice, but students also seem to be comfortable seeing x^2 for x², sqrt(x) for √x, writing out theta, etc. The less-than sign (<) is used for angle sign (geometry). Mixing cases or just combining letters can sometimes substitute for subscripts: vI instead of vᵢ.
