Copy a symbol below and paste into the UPchieve chat window. On MS Windows you can type in an alt code instead, on Mac OS you can open an on-screen keyboard and press the character. None of these options is particularly speedy, especially when using multiple symbols. Not all characters exist, including apparently a subscript y or t.
Commonly used Greek alphabet: θ, π, μ, σ, α, β, Δ, Σ, Φ, Ω, Γ, λ, ψ, ω
Square root: √, two character combinations: ³√, ±√
Degree sign: °
Logic, sets: ⋂ ⋃ ⊂ ⊃ ⊗ ∵ ∴ ⋮ ∀ ∃
Equalities: ≠ ≤ ≥ ≅ ±
Superscripts: ⁰ ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ ᴬ ᵃ ᵇ ᵉ ᵏ ⁿ ᵗ ᵝ ⁽ ⁺ ⁻ ⁾
Subscripts: ₀ ₁ ₂ ₃ ₄ ₐ ₑ ᵢ ₒ ᵣ ₓ ᵦ
Italics: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Geometry: → ⊢
Calculus: ∫ ∞
These are nice, but students also seem to be comfortable seeing x^2 for x², sqrt(x) for √x, writing out theta, etc. The less-than sign (<) is used for angle sign (geometry).
Mixing cases or just combining letters can sometimes substitute for subscripts: vI instead of vᵢ. This can be a little confusing, often using spaces to better separate terms is helpful.
